COVID Winter Grant Scheme
The government have a new package which offers help over winter. It is aimed at families with children who have been hardest hit by the pandemic and are struggling to pay for food and heating. You can read about the COVID Winter Grant Scheme on GOV.UK.
What the scheme can help with
This scheme can help with:
- gas bills
- electricity bills
Help towards food is provided through Bracknell or Crowthorne Foodbank. Families can pick up pre-prepared food boxes on foot or use the drive through. Each box contains a mix of non-perishable items and they can be adjusted for dietary requirements. The food box aims to cover 3 days of food.
Gas and electricity bills
Help towards gas or electricity bills is a contribution of £49. There is a maximum grant of £98 for both utilities. This is a one off payment, but residents can apply for further funding support if needed.
If you have a meter card, this will be given through a PayPoint top up. If you have regular billing this will be paid directly to your utility company.
What the scheme cannot help with
The scheme cannot help with costs like rent or council tax.

Who is eligible
To be eligible for the scheme you must:
- live in Bracknell Forest
- not have enough resources to provide food, gas or electricity for yourself or your household as a result of the impact of COVID-19
- declare that you have less than £3,000 in cash, savings and investments
Schools and early years settings
This scheme also offers support through schools and early years settings. This is in the form of either supermarket food vouchers or food parcels.
If your child is eligible for Free School Meals their school will contact you about support for food.
If your child is eligible for specific early years funding support, their early years setting will contact you about support for food.
If you think this might apply to your child but you have not heard from their school or early years setting, please contact them.
This does not prevent you from applying for help from us, if you are in wider financial difficulty.
Please note that there is no right of appeal but if you feel the decision is wrong, please contact us within 3 days.
