Leisure services review
This transformation review has now been completed.
The purpose of the review was to create and deliver a sustainable, long-term plan for leisure activities in Bracknell Forest.
This plan needed to:
- reflect the future needs of Bracknell Forest and its residents, while providing savings
- understand and determine the council’s future role in Bracknell Forest's leisure market and its level of current and future subsidy
- review the council’s leisure provision
- map out what provision, services and activities exist in Bracknell Forest, who provides them and how they fit together
- explore and assess alternative ways of providing leisure services
During 2017 we carried out a market testing exercise to see if it would be possible to make substantial savings by outsourcing the management of Bracknell Leisure Centre, Coral Reef and Downshire Golf Complex to a private sector leisure operator.
As a result of this exercise, a decision was made to enter into a partnership with Everyone Active effective from 1 March 2018. Entering into this partnership was deemed to be the best option in order to make savings whilst continuing to provide a quality leisure offer to our residents.
Everyone Active, part of Sports & Leisure Management Ltd, is a leading nationally recognised leisure management company. Having recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, it is the longest-established leisure provider in the UK and currently operates more than 150 facilities with 48 Local Authorities across the country.
As a result of the new leisure partnership a £2.8 million refurbishment of Bracknell Leisure Centre was approved by the council, who will be working alongside Everyone Active to finance and deliver the project. As a result of this investment by the council, which was only made possible through the new agreement, the leisure centre will undergo significant improvement works to introduce a host of modernised facilities to the community.
The project will include relocating the gym and making it bigger. More than £400,000 will be invested into state-of-the-art fitness equipment. A new group exercise studio will also be introduced and both the dry-side and pool-side changing areas will be renovated.
The centre is also due to undergo a range of aesthetic enhancements to bring it up to date. The reception and café areas will be modernised, and improvements will be made to its external frontage to present a contemporary look.
Full details of the development are being finalised, with work expected to start on site in summer 2018. Customers have been notified of the works, and any groups who will be affected by the changes have been supported to find alternative venues. The centre will remain open throughout the works, with minimum disruption to visitors.
