What is shared housing?

A house in multiple occupation (HMO) is a house where:

  • 3 or more unrelated people live there, forming more than 1 household
  • you share toilet, bathroom or kitchen facilities with other people

A household may be:

  • a single person
  • several members of the same family, all related by blood or marriage

For example:

  • a house occupied by a brother, sister and one other unrelated occupant would form 2 households
  • 3 unrelated persons would form 3 households
