If you find yourself homeless

If we have not been able to prevent you from becoming homeless under the prevention duty, you will be owed the relief duty.

During the relief duty we must take reasonable steps to help you to secure suitable accommodation. The relief duty lasts for up to 56 days and is available to all households who are homeless and eligible.

If you have no local connection to Bracknell Forest, the assistance we can provide is limited and we will consider referring you to the borough you have a connection to.

We will try to assist you with finding an alternative suitable accommodation that will be available for at least 6 months. This does not have to be council or housing association housing and could be a private rented tenancy. If you refuse a suitable offer during this time then the council may not have any further duty to house you.

We will seek to identify accommodation that is within the borough. However, given the short supply of housing available across the borough in many cases this is likely to be outside the Bracknell Forest area.

In circumstances where the council has to provide emergency accommodation to you as a homeless household, where there is no other option we may have to place you in bed and breakfast accommodation. This accommodation may also be outside of the Bracknell Forest area.

If your homelessness is not relieved within 56 days then the council will normally end the relief duty and issue you with a homeless decision.

If you think you might lose your home, it’s important that you contact us and get advice as soon as possible.
