A322 Downshire Way improvement scheme starts

Traffic cones on a road

Work to expand Downshire Way, between the Horse and Groom and Twin Bridges roundabouts, into a dual carriageway will start on Monday, 18 February.

Once complete, the scheme will contribute towards:

  • more reliable journey times
  • the ability for local residents to move more easily around the local road network,
  • reduced congestion which in turn improves air quality
  • improved landscaping wherever achievable (such as trees and planting)
  • a fully renewed road surface, free from defects, which will reduce noise pollution

The scheme will begin with the set-up of the working site and removal of the affected trees. Tree experts have been consulted to determine which trees will be affected with the aim of saving as many trees as possible. The majority of mature trees are to remain but some along the 900m length of Downshire Way will need to be removed to accommodate the widening works.

However, improvements to planting and vegetation along the road will accompany the scheme to form a “greenway”. This will provide visual and environmental benefits including connected woodlands and the introduction of new habitats for wildlife. While some trees are being removed, the greenway project will replace these trees to provide long-term enrichment for the local community and wildlife.

Cllr Chris Turrell, executive member for planning and transport said:

“We are dedicated to improving the local road network for our residents by reducing congestion, renewing roads and making it easier to get around. The A322 Downshire Way improvement scheme will not only contribute towards more reliable journeys but will also provide environmental benefits. We will ensure that all work is undertaken as quickly as possible to minimise disruption to road users.”

When the work begins the A322 will be reduced to 30mph to protect both the road users and the workers. It will also be necessary to prohibit the right turn into Old Bracknell Lane West for periods of time. The contractor will maintain the right-turn whenever possible, and both the left-turn in and left-turn out of Old Bracknell Lane West will be available at all times. Once the final phase is complete, the right-turn into Old Bracknell Lane West will remain in place and will be controlled by traffic signals.
