Council set to approve £4.5m funding to support the next stages of town centre regeneration

Bracknell Town Centre

Exciting proposals to bring forward the much-wanted refurbishment of Princess Square and creation of The Deck in Bracknell town centre will be discussed next week.

Bracknell Forest Council’s decision-making executive is due to approve £4.5m of funding for the further regeneration of Bracknell town centre – primarily bringing forward The Deck.

Following the successful launch of The Lexicon, the council continues to work closely with Bracknell Regeneration Partnership (BRP) to look at how further regeneration of the town centre can take place for the benefit of residents, visitors and the local economy.

The next step is to support the refurbishment of Princess Square and invest in the The Deck, where the old Bentalls store was situated, to bring both schemes forward as soon as possible.

If funding is agreed it would further strengthen the council’s commitment to providing a fully regenerated town centre fit for the 21st Century. It links to the council’s recently published Town Centre Vision 2032, which looks at how sites within the town centre could be positively redeveloped in the short, medium and long term.

Cllr Marc Brunel-Walker, executive member for economic development and regeneration, said:

“We’re continuing to work closely with our development partners at BRP on the overall regeneration of Bracknell town centre. Recently this work has focused on bringing forward the The Deck by 2021 and the imminent refurbishment of Princess Square, which we know is a particularly important next step in the regeneration of the town.

“If funding is approved it is really exciting news as it means that work on The Deck and the refurbishment of Princess Square could start as early as this Spring.

“We’ve always been committed to regenerating our town centre for the benefit of everyone who lives, works and visits the area, so this is the next step in our vision.”

If the executive agree funding at its meeting on Tuesday 12 February, then it will go to full council at the end of February for final agreement.

If ratified, work on the full refurbishment of Princess Square would then likely start in spring 2019 and work would also start on The Deck with an anticipated 2021 completion.

Both sites are key to delivering the council’s Town Centre Vision 2032

Notes:

The Deck, part of The Lexicon, is 3,165 sq ft – 19,000 sq ft of retail, restaurant and leisure space.

The redevelopment of Bracknell town centre is being carried out in phases. The Lexicon was one phase of its overall regeneration.
