Bracknell reaches its grand 70th anniversary as a new town later this month and you’re all invited to take part in the celebrations.
Pick up your party spirit and head on down to Bond Square on Saturday 15 June where a host of activities will be taking place as part of the borough’s Community Day.
The Community Day, organised by Involve Community Services Easthampstead Rotary Club and the Bracknell Forest Society with support from The Lexicon and Bellway Homes, will feature a Bracknell Forest Council 70th birthday stall where you can:
- post your memories of Bracknell in the birthday post box and be in with the chance of winning £70 of The Lexicon gift vouchers
- help create a piece of artwork in the shape of a giant 70
- get your hands on some retro sweets
- have a selfie taken in the special #BracknellTurns70 frame
- speak to Victor Nicholls from the University of Reading’s Henley Business School, author of the book ‘The Lexicon - Making it happen’, which draws from his experience of helping mastermind the town’s recent regeneration
Plus, no birthday party would be complete without cake, so there will be 500 free cupcakes given out during the event.
On the town’s actual anniversary, Monday, 17 June, 2019, the borough council will launch a series of memories from long-time Bracknell residents who will also be turning 70 in 2019.
It will also be taking a trip down memory lane with its seven decades in seven days flashback.
Cllr Paul Bettison, Leader of Bracknell Forest Council, said:
“Bracknell has a wonderful history as a new town and has been through a vast amount of change in the past 70 years.
“We’re really pleased to be linking up with Involve and The Lexicon at the Community Day on 15 June to celebrate this milestone in the town’s history and whole heartedly invite all our residents to come on down and take part in the festivities.
“We’ll also be extending the celebrations through the town’s birthday week; we hope you all enjoy the trip down memory lane with us.”
Bracknell was officially designated as a post war new town on Friday, 17 June, 1949, to help alleviate some of the London housing crisis after World War II. Its town centre is the first of the post war new towns to be comprehensively masterplanned, demolished and redeveloped, with the creation of The Lexicon. The Lexicon is one of the largest urban regeneration schemes created in the UK over the past decade.
