Our website has been ranked joint second in the UK in the latest Sitemorse INDEX review for local government. The Sitemorse INDEX is an independent industry standard for benchmarking digital governance.
Sites are reviewed and scored based on 1,600 tests, checks and measures per page, identifying actions that improve user experience, optimisation and compliance. This includes factors such as loading speed, links and accessibility.
The ranking reflects the council’s ongoing commitment to making the website inclusive and user friendly for everyone. It also reflects the ongoing work by the council’s digital services team to improve the accessibility of the website.
This work has included:
- reviewing website content to make sure it is useful and easy to read - the website is reviewed each year by the Plain English Campaign and currently holds an Internet Crystal Mark
- testing of the website by people with a wide range of disabilities - the website has achieved a Shaw Trust Accessible rating and is reviewed monthly to make sure this rating is maintained
- adding easy read content to the website - easy read refers to the presentation of text in an accessible, easy to understand format - it is useful for people with learning disabilities and may also be beneficial for people with other conditions affecting how they process information
- improving the accessibility of PDF documents - work is ongoing to reduce the number of documents on the website with accessibility issues
John Harrison, Executive Member for Culture, Delivery and Public Protection, said:
