Garth Hill College COVID-19 update

Coronavirus representation

Update: 4 December 2020

Due to a number of positive COVID-19 cases at Garth Hill College and a wider number of staff and students self-isolating, the school will remain closed to all students, except children of key workers and vulnerable children, on Monday 7 December and Tuesday 8 December. Students in years 7 to 13 should continue to learn online.

From Wednesday 9 December, the school will open only to:

  • students in years 12 and 13 unless they have been told to self-isolate
  • children of key workers
  • vulnerable children

Students in other year groups should continue to learn remotely at home.

The school will continue to monitor the situation and will update again when there is information on when it will be able to open to other year groups.

Additionally, due to a positive case at Rise@ GHC in Eastern Road, the setting closed yesterday for all pupils and will remain closed today (Friday 4 December).

These are not decisions the school has taken lightly. They have been made in the best interest of keeping all staff and pupils as safe as possible.

Given the number of staff self-isolating it is not possible to open the school safely and in line with teacher/pupil supervision ratios.

Provision will continue to be made available for key worker and vulnerable children. All pupils will be able to access online learning resources and live lessons will be made available, where possible.

The school will continue to keep parents and carers updated directly. Any parent or carer with concerns is urged to speak directly to the school.

Parents have been provided with information on what to do should their child develop symptoms of COVID-19, what symptoms to look out for and how to prevent the virus spreading. More information can be found on the NHS website.

Please note that all close contact tracing has been completed. All close contacts have been identified and advised to self-isolate.

Update: 30 November 2020

Garth Hill College will remain closed all of this week following a COVID-19 outbreak, with online learning in place for all pupils.

A number of staff and students have tested positive over the past couple of days and, due to close contact tracing, a wider number of staff and students are now also self-isolating. All close contacts have been identified and advised to self-isolate.

The school was due to be closed today (Monday) and tomorrow (Tuesday) for performance review days but given the number of staff self-isolating it is not possible to open the school safely and in line with teacher/ pupil supervision ratios from Wednesday. Therefore it will remain closed for the rest of this week.

Rise@ GHC in Eastern Road will remain open as normal and on-site learning provision will be made available for key worker and vulnerable children.

All pupils will be able to access online learning resources and live lessons will be made available where possible.

Plans for next week will rely on available staff cover; the school will update parents and pupils later this week on future plans.

Parents have been provided with information on what to do should their child develop symptoms of COVID-19, what symptoms to look out for and how to prevent the virus spreading. More information can be found on the NHS website.
