Pride 2021

Hands holding up the Pride flag

June is Pride month, a time dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ communities all around the world. It’s a month of people coming together in love and friendship to show how far gay rights have come, whilst also teaching tolerance, learning about Pride history and continuing to fight for equality.

To celebrate Pride this year, we will be flying the progress flag, lighting up Time Square and changing our social media logos to rainbow colours. Throughout the month we will be sharing more information, as well as some of our employee’s own thoughts and experiences of Pride.

Pride is celebrated during June because it was the month of the Stonewall riots in 1969, the protests that changed gay rights for many people worldwide. Shortly after the protests, the first Pride event in the UK took place in 1972 where around 2,000 people attended. Now, more than a million people celebrate the festival every year in London.

This shows just how far we have come in the fight for equality, but there is still more work to be done so that everyone can be accepted for who they are.

As of 2020, representation for the LGBTQ+ community in television improved drastically. Books, podcasts, TV shows and documentaries showcase the ongoing battle against homophobic and transphobic aggression. Channel 4’s It's A Sin gave us an insight into what life was like in 1981 to 1991 as it depicts the lives of a group of gay men and their friends living in London during the HIV and AIDS crisis. You can find more shows that represent the LGBTQ+ community as well as informative books which celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

We are proud to recognise and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. If you’re celebrating Pride this year, it would be great to hear from you! Tell us about your plans as well as your experiences, we’d love to share them to help raise awareness, share information and support this annual celebration.
