Imagination Library in Bracknell Forest

toddler reading book

As part of the council’s recovery plan for children’s education, we have joined forces with The Dollywood Foundation to bring Dolly Parton’s renowned Imagination Library to an estimated 450 eligible children in Bracknell Forest.

Founded and launched by Dolly Parton, the Imagination Library aims to inspire a love of reading and increase literacy skills. Each month, enrolled children (from birth to age 5) will receive a high quality, age appropriate book in the post, free of charge. The books are personally addressed to each individual child and are carefully selected by a panel of experts in early childhood development and reading.

In order to qualify for the programme, hosted by the council’s Early Help Service and the Family Hubs, you must meet the criteria to join. Eligible families will be contacted directly to take part.

Cllr Dr Gareth Barnard, Executive Member for Children, Young people and Learning, said:

“After what has been a really difficult year for our borough’s children, we are so pleased to be launching the Imagination Library Programme in Bracknell Forest.

“We wanted to give those who need it most the opportunity to better their reading skills and enjoy getting lost in some brilliant books.

“Growing up we all had a book that we loved, whether it was a bedtime story to help you drift off or one that only your grandmother could do the voices for. Sitting down with a family member and reading together really instils that love of reading from a young age and can have a huge impact on attainment and success at school.

“If you meet the criteria and are invited to join, please take advantage of the scheme and sign up. A child who enrols in the scheme from birth to their fifth birthday will build their own home library of up to 60 books that they can keep forever.”

As well as the Imagination Library, our borough libraries and Family Hubs offer an abundance of events for both children and adults to enjoy, and the Community Learning team hosts a variety of courses for those wanting to learn a new skill or hobby.
