Don't delay - book your winter vaccinations when invited

This autumn and winter, those eligible are being urged to book their annual flu jab as well as the seasonal COVID-19 booster as soon as they are invited, to top up their immunity and protect themselves and their loved ones.

While the flu can be unpleasant for most, it can be life threatening for some, particularly those with certain health conditions. If you are eligible, getting both vaccines is important, as you are also more likely to be seriously ill if you get flu and COVID-19 at the same time.

The flu vaccine is available to everyone over 50, with those most at risk and over 65 being invited first. This includes:

  • those who live with someone at risk from infections
  • carers
  • those in long-stay residential care
  • pregnant women
  • frontline health care workers.

Children (up to secondary school year 11) will be offered the nasal spray version of the flu vaccine at school.

People eligible for an autumn COVID-19 booster include:

  • those aged 50 and over
  • people aged 5 and over who have underlying health conditions
  • people aged 5 and over who live with someone at risk from infections
  • carers
  • those in long-stay residential care
  • pregnant women
  • frontline health care workers

The NHS is strongly urging those eligible to come forward as soon as they are invited. The vaccines remain the best protection against serious illness and hospitalisation from flu and COVID-19 this winter.

Cllr Dale Birch, executive member for adult services, health and housing, gets his flu jab every year and encourages Bracknell Forest residents to do the same, he said:

“This winter, both flu and COVID-19 will be circulating and it is important to get your vaccinations as soon as you are able to. This winter, it is likely that more people will get the flu. Research has shown that you are at greater risk of becoming seriously ill if you get flu and COVID-19 at the same time.

“Please don’t delay. Book your appointment to get your winter vaccinations as soon as you are invited. Boost your immunity and help protect yourself and your loved ones.”

If eligible, you will receive a reminder to book your COVID-19 autumn booster and your flu vaccination. This may not be at the same time. Please follow the instructions on how to book for your area.
