A bid to open a new school for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Bracknell Forest, has been approved by the Department for Education (DfE).

The new school is one element of Bracknell Forest Council’s strategy to improve the provision of SEND within the borough. The successful bid will enable the project to progress to the next stage in providing a bespoke educational setting for 100 children and young people with SEND.

The council, alongside the DfE, will now finalise the location and start the process of appointing an organisation to establish and run the new school.

Cheryl Eyre, assistant director for education and learning at Bracknell Forest Council, said:

“We are thrilled that our bid to provide a SEND specific school has been successful. When open, this much needed facility will benefit a number of children and young people in the borough and will make they are receiving tailored education to suit their specific needs.

“Getting the approval to progress with this project is an important first step in bringing the school to fruition. We will be working closely with the DfE over the coming months to ensure the right operator is in place to bring our vision to life.

“There are a number of details that we are now working on and we will keep residents informed when further information regarding the location of the school and timescale for opening are known.”
