Information for voting in the local elections

Hand putting a vote through a polling box

Thursday 4 May sees borough, parish and town elections across Bracknell Forest.

Here is all the information you need for voting.

Polling stations

Polling stations will often be located in churches, community centres, council buildings and occasionally schools. We have 60 polling stations in the borough.

For those making their way to the polling station to vote, they will be open from 7am until 10pm on Thursday 4 May.

Nominated people

If you need to check who the candidates are for your area, you can check the statement of persons nominated online for the full list.

Don't forget your ID

All voters must now show ID. This is a national change and means, for the first time, anyone voting in person must show ID inside the polling station. The ID does not have to be in date, but it must be a good photographic likeness of you and in the name you are registered to vote under.

You will be turned away without an accepted form of ID, even if you are known to polling station staff. If you forget your ID but have time to collect it and return to vote, please do.

Whilst you don't need your polling card to vote, it is recommended that you bring it with you. This speeds up the process of presenting you with your ballot paper.

Polling staff

Polling station staff are on hand to help you. They will be happy to answer any questions you might have. Please be patient and courteous to all polling staff.

If you have a disability or long-term condition and require a reasonable adjustment, please let the staff know and they will be happy to help.

At the polling station

Give your name and address to the staff inside the polling station when you arrive. You do not need to give any information or show ID to anyone outside the polling station.

Once inside, you’ll need to show your photo ID to confirm your identity.

You’ll be given a ballot paper containing a list of the people and parties you can vote for. Follow the instructions on the notices in the polling booth and on the top of the ballot paper to vote.

Postal vote options

If you have had issues returning your postal vote, you still have options.

You can take it to your local polling station by 10pm on Thursday 4 May. Please do not return it to any polling station outside of the ward you are voting in. You can also drop it off at the council offices in Time Square. Your ballot paper needs to clearly display your details and voting choice.

You cannot vote at a polling station if you registered to vote by post but your ballot paper was lost or damaged.

If you have not received your postal vote, or need a replacement, you will have until 5pm on Thursday 4 May to get a replacement. You will need to collect this from the council offices in Time Square.

Results

After the polls close at 10pm on Thursday 4 May, the ballot boxes will be taken to Bracknell Leisure Centre for the verification.

The verification is separate from the actual count. The verification makes sure the number of ballot papers in each box matches the number of ballot papers issued as stated on the ballot paper account. Whilst this is there to make sure accuracy is maintained, it does not actually count the number of votes for each candidate.

The verification will be completed overnight on Thursday 4 May and the official count will take place on Friday 5 May. This means the results will not be known for any of the elections until the afternoon of Friday 5 May.

The borough count will be completed first followed by the parish and town count and declarations.

We will post live information from the count on Friday on our main social media channels. Full results will also be available on our current elections page.
