Support available for fostering

The decision to foster is not always simple but it helps to know if you decide to proceed you’ll be provided with extensive training, advice and financial support.

Financial support

Our foster carers receive:

  • a weekly fostering allowance and market supplement of up to £425 per week per child which is usually tax free
  • paid membership of The Fostering Network which provides online advice and guidance to foster carers

Other support and benefits

You’ll also benefit from:

  • monthly visits from an experienced supervising social worker
  • 24 hour telephone support
  • support and guidance from family support workers
  • therapeutic support if required
  • excellent training and development opportunities
  • respite relief when needed
  • events for foster carers to meet up and share experiences
  • benefits and discounts for carers including free use of leisure centres and the Look Out Discovery Centre

Training

We want you to enjoy being a foster carer, to be confident in what you do and proud that you are doing it to the best of your ability. We therefore provide a range of face to face and online training and development opportunities.

In recent years we have covered a range of topics, including:

  • caring for children who have been neglected/abused
  • caring for different age groups (toddlers, teenagers)
  • child protection
  • children who foster (a group for foster carers' own children)
  • drugs awareness
  • first aid for carers
  • managing contact with birth families
  • managing difficult behaviour
  • substance misuse and mental health
  • bereavement and loss
