The winter service programme runs from first week in November until the first week of April.
During winter, our contractor pre salts primary routes if the weather forecast show this is necessary. Primary routes are principal and other heavily trafficked roads. Secondary routes (lesser used roads) are also salted during particularly severe weather conditions, principally when it snows.
We use a sophisticated weather forecasting and ice prediction system based on specific forecasts for the borough provided by the MeteoGroup. This enables a faster response to local weather conditions and earlier pre salting of primary routes before snow or ice sets in.
Some locations not on primary routes have also been identified where regular spot salting will be carried out.
