How your business rate bill is calculated

The council send out annual business rate bills to the occupiers of non-domestic properties before 1 April each year.

The annual business rate bill is calculated by multiplying the rateable value of the property by the appropriate multiplier.

There are 2 multipliers: the standard non-domestic rating and the small business rate multiplier. The multipliers are set annually by the government.

The multipliers for 2024 to 2025 are:

  • non-domestic rating multiplier: 54.6 pence
  • small business non-domestic rating multiplier: 49.9 pence

Check your rateable value

Each non-domestic property has a rateable value which is set by the Valuation Office Agency. You can check your rateable value and compare it with others on the Valuation Office Agency website.

Challenge your rateable value

If you think that your rateable value is incorrect, you can make an appeal.

All appeals against rateable values should be directed to the Valuation Office Agency.

Even though you may decide to appeal or have already appealed, you must still pay your business rates until a decision is made. If your appeal is successful, your account will be adjusted accordingly.
