Make a difference as a school governor

The governing body of Wooden Hill Primary and Nursery School has 3 co-opted governor vacancies and would love to hear from self-motivated and determined people who are interested in becoming a governor.

If you would like to help make a positive contribution to children’s education, have a passion for children’s education or could you use your workplace skills in partnership with our governing body to promote continuous improvement in the performance of the school, volunteering to become a school governor could be for you.

If you have enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, the confidence to challenge and actively contribute during discussions, an ability to work closely and collaboratively with others then volunteering to become a school governor is definitely for you.

About us

Our governing body is made up of 12 governors:

  • 2 elected parent governors
  • 1 local authority governor
  • 1 elected staff governor
  • the Headteacher
  • 7 co-opted governors

The governing body normally meets 6 times a year and in addition governors choose to sit on a committee for which there are 3 meetings a year. Governors are also expected to visit the school termly for monitoring purposes.

The role

At Wooden Hill no specific experience is essential. However, the governing body would particularly welcome nominations from people with skills or experience in HR or business.

You will need to:

  • attend meetings and take an active part in them
  • help the governing body make informed decisions
  • get involved with the school and its pupils

You will be provided with training. This is delivered by Bracknell Forest Council or through the National Governance Association. This includes online learning for other sectors and types of work. This training makes school governance one of the best forms of personal and professional development.

In addition you would be assigned a mentor to support you and help you as you learn the ropes.
