Reasons for an Early Help Assessment

There may be different reasons for an Early Help assessment (EHA). It always tries to find answers to any difficulties you may be having. The assessment also looks at things you do well, as this is also important.

The assessment will help the people who support you to work better together.

About the EHA process

The EHA is simple. It saves you having to say things about yourself lots of times, to lots of people.

Your worker will talk to you about why they feel you would benefit from some extra support. Your worker will also ask your parent’s or carer’s permission to do the assessment.

You, your family and worker will just have a chat about different areas of your life, like health and education.

With you and your family, your worker will list the things you are good at and the things that you may need extra help with to make your life easier.

An EHA is completed with you and your family so you can expect to know what is happening. Your views are important. Your worker will make sure that your wishes are taken seriously when looking to move things forward.

By the end of your assessment, you, your family and worker will have agreed an action plan. You will then decide together how to make this plan happen. This could mean someone else helping you on top of any help or support you already get.

Information about me and how it's shared

As a rule, your EHA will not be shared without you and your family’s consent. There may, however, be times where it is necessary to share information.

For example:

  • if you are at any risk of harm
  • if someone else is at risk of harm
  • to help stop a crime

Help and support

We hope things go smoothly.

If you become unhappy or concerned during your assessment, tell your worker about this.

If you do not feel able to speak to your worker, you may want to find another adult who you feel comfortable around and ask them to help you.

If you have any queries about the Early Help Assessment or the process which the completer has not been able to answer, please contact Please write in the subject box:  EHA query.
