Reasonable adjustments
Under the Equality Act 2010, councils must proactively offer to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people in the way they deliver services. It is against the law for us to treat disabled customers less favourably than non-disabled customers.
We must remove barriers that:
- prevent disabled people from accessing our services
- could make accessing our services more difficult for them
This is known as making reasonable adjustments.
Reasonable adjustments can include changing policies and procedures that may discriminate. They can also include providing:
- equipment and making adaptations
- information in alternative formats
- a service in a different way
We give guidance on making reasonable adjustments in the way we deliver services to customers and disabled pupils.
Communicating with us
Contact us if you have a disability or long term condition and need a reasonable adjustment to communicate with us.
If you have a hearing impairment
Depending on your needs and the type of service or enquiry, there are a number of facilities or services that the council uses to help communication. For example, induction loops, or British Sign Language Interpreters.
Recruitment and working at the council
We encourage you to tell us if you need an adjustment made during our recruitment process. If you don't tell us in the first stage of recruitment, you can still tell us at later stages.
Examples of reasonable adjustments include:
- hybrid working
- remove bright lights
- modify instructions
- give frequent breaks
- modify procedures
- height adjustable desks
- widen a doorway
- allow extra time for tasks
- adjust or remove tests
- provide more training
Help with languages
Our staff will make every effort to accommodate the needs of individuals who use alternative languages. We have a number of staff who are able to assist with translating a number of languages, such as French, German and Hindi, for those wishing to use the council’s services.
Where necessary, we can also arrange for a translation service to be provided by an external company.
Alternative formats
Contact us if you need something in an alternative format.
Accessibility guides
Accessibility guides give detailed information about council venues to help you work out how accessible they will be for you.
