About the project
This initiative is part of a nationwide programme commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
It involves over 80 libraries, museums and arts centres across the country, all reflecting on the significance of freedom through a variety of community events and artistic projects.
About the project in Bracknell
Bracknell Forest Libraries, in partnership with Libraries Connected, has been awarded funding from the Arts Council through the Department for Culture, Media and Sport for the ‘Our Freedom: Then and Now’ project.
In the coming months, we will be sharing details of a series of exciting events and creative projects that invite residents to:
- explore the meaning of freedom
- celebrate what it means in Bracknell
- share their personal stories of life in Bracknell
Our project will explore the theme of freedom, inspired by Bracknell Forest’s iconic trees – symbols of shelter, strength and growth. Freedom is also a key part of Bracknell’s history, from the new town beginnings to the opportunities it still offers today.

What freedom means to you
As we commemorate VJ Day, marking the Allied victory over Japan in 1945 and the end of the Second World War, we invite residents of all ages to reflect on what freedom means to them today and in the future.
Share your thoughts by completing our short online form, with questions designed for both adults and children. Your reflections will help us honour the past, celebrate the freedoms we enjoy today and contribute to our wider Our Freedom: Then and Now project.
Events coming soon
Here’s what’s coming:
Bracknell fairytale
Children’s author Catherine Emmett will write a story inspired by local people and history. This will be performed at a special finale event.
Freedom tree art installations
Our libraries will feature beautiful tree displays. Each leaf will carry residents’ thoughts on what freedom means to them.
Leaf craft workshops
We will be holding hands-on sessions in our libraries and community spaces. There will also be free craft packs to get involved from anywhere!
Self-guided history walk
Explore Bracknell’s past with a new leaflet created by the Bracknell Forest Society. The leaflet links history with today’s reflections on freedom.
Finale Event at Bracknell Library
Join us in November as we unveil:
- art installations
- a live fairy tale performance
- an exhibition of community art and historic Bracknell photographs
We’re excited to unite people from all over Bracknell - sparking new friendships and building connections. We want everyone to feel included in our community!
