Internet use policy at libraries

The library and information service provides free access to internet services for all registered library members. We reserve the right to alter this policy or withdraw this service at any time.

1. The internet is a global electronic network and Bracknell Forest Council Library and Information Service is not and cannot be held responsible for the accuracy, validity, legality or usefulness of any sites, content or information accessed.

2. Bracknell Forest Council Library and Information Service cannot guarantee access to the internet will always be available; nor can we guarantee access speed or the ability to access specific sites.

3. All library members are entitled to 1 hour’s free access per open day on production of a valid membership card. You may have extra time if nobody is waiting to use a terminal, ask at the counter for details. Never give your login details or password to any other person. If you are not a library member, or have forgotten your ticket, you can still use the internet, but there will be a charge. Ask a member of staff or refer to our current charges information for details.

4. Unauthorised use of a library card to access the internet by any individual, other than the cardholder in person, that is the person the card has been issued to, is strictly prohibited. Access is not transferable to another individual and may result in the service being withdrawn.

5. Transmission, viewing, storing or emailing of any material in violation of laws is strictly prohibited. Including but not limited to material that is: copyrighted, threatening, obscene, pornographic, using offensive language or protected by trade secret.

6. We reserve the right to monitor or stop user sessions where inappropriate material is accessed or this policy is contravened in any way. We further reserve the right to withdraw the use of this service at our sole discretion.

7. We strongly recommend that you do not use public access PCs for sending credit/debit card transactions or bank details to online suppliers or Internet banking.

Children and young people

1. Consent of parents or legal guardians is required before any child under the age of 16 years can use the internet.

2. Bracknell Forest Borough Council Library and Information Service accept no responsibility for the sites or content any child or young person may access.

3. Parents or legal guardians should be aware that whilst filtering software is used on public PCs, we cannot guarantee children will not be able to access inappropriate material. We advise and encourage parents or legal guardians to supervise their child’s use of the internet at all times.

4. Parents or legal guardians should be aware that children may access chat rooms and it is their responsibility to make sure their child acts appropriately and safely. We advise they do not send or reveal any personal details or agree to meet people.
