Irene's story

I was born and raised in Kenya but moved to the UK in 2001.

My journey as a foster carer started when l received a leaflet through the letter box, encouraging people to become foster carers. In my heart I knew it was achievable because I care about people a lot. I got in touch with the fostering team at Bracknell Forest Council, who took it from there.

I was then enrolled into various courses such as skills to fostering, a course that helped me understand the challenges of becoming a foster carer, day-to-day skills, support and many more training sessions.

I was approved as a foster carer around 2017. For sure, it has completely changed my life.

Being a foster carer, you are not alone on this journey - there is a massive support network around you from professionals. They offer training to boost your skills and knowledge in meeting the needs of children in your care. Support, advice, respite, help, and much more is provided.

I’m a proud African woman, who embraces both African and British Cultures, and also being part of the fostering team, bringing a great positive impact in someone’s life. Fostering is a rewarding job. Many vulnerable children and young people deserve a brighter future and happiness in their lives.

Together we can do it!
