Beginners IT basics: January 2026

Introduction to computer basics for learners with little or extremely limited experience with technology. 

All the basics will be covered including using the internet, email, creating different documents and saving them. 

The course looks at:

  • different devices and operating systems
  • basic introduction to networks and wifi
  • understand files and organising folders
  • using the Internet to search for information and pictures
  • creating and editing documents using Word
  • creating and editing spreadsheets using Excel
  • using email including attachments
  • using the internet safely, scams and viruses

How to enrol

To enrol on this course you need to attend our job club.

Entry requirements

This course is suitable for learners who have little or extremely limited computer and digital skills.

Material required for the course

There are no pre-requisites.

There is no requirement to have access to technology outside of the classroom.

If you have a tablet or smartphone bring them with you.

A USB memory stick is useful if you have one.

Assessment

This course is assessed through self-evaluation at the end of the session.

Next steps

On finishing this course you can progress to other computer courses or to the ‘Pearson Essential Digital Skills’ qualification.
