Calligraphy for beginners: March 2026

This is an introductory course to calligraphy. You will learn how to use different materials and tools, based on techniques used in ancient manuscripts.

You will complete a small project using the foundational hand style of writing.

By the end of the course learners will be able to:

  • use a basic calligraphy pen
  • identify 3 different pen angles
  • explain the characteristics of Foundational Hand
  • write the Foundational Hand lower case letters
  • complete a simple project using the techniques learnt

Entry requirements

There is no entry requirement for this course.

Material required for the course

All materials will be provided.

Bring an apron if required.

Teaching method

Teaching will be through:

  • formal instruction
  • practical demonstration
  • discussion
  • individual Instruction
  • peer evaluation

How is your progress checked

An initial assessment will be carried out for each leaner to assess their current knowledge and starting point.

An individual learning plan will then be discussed with each learner to establish what they would like to achieve on the course.

Individual help and instruction will be provided to each learner to support their progress.

Next steps

Learners can progress to other wellbeing courses.

Progression to the Calligraphy Lettering & Art Society for accredited programmes.
