Speaking and Listening:
- Practice speaking skills in different scenarios using a communicative approach.
- Engage in group discussions and pair work to develop conversational skills and questioning strategies.
- Watch and listen to conversations to identify features of non-verbal communication and pronunciation, including stress and intonation.
- Develop vocabulary and knowledge of words to support speaking and listening skills.
- Obtain information from verbal communication, follow instructions, and pick out key words and phrases.
- Use correct pronunciation, stress, and intonation to convey meaning and context.
- Express and respond to greetings, ask and answer questions, and make statements of fact in everyday contexts.
Reading:
- Develop skills to read and understand short texts such as public signs, notices, maps, lists, forms, letters, emails, adverts, and posters.
- Follow short texts and recognize different types and purposes of text through layout and presentational features.
- Use context or key word recognition to infer meaning from texts.
- Recognize common words, signs, symbols, and letters in both upper and lower case.
- Identify the main events in straightforward texts using textual clues.
- Use graphics to help identify meaning and obtain relevant information from texts.
- Recognize common symbols and signs and their meanings.
Writing:
- Produce simple sentences to record and present basic information and ideas.
- Use correct punctuation for the end of sentences and capitalization for the beginning of sentences, names, places, and the personal pronoun ‘I’.
- Complete simple forms correctly using upper and lower case letters.
- Spell personal key words and familiar words correctly.
- Engage in various writing activities such as lists, messages, notes, and short responses.
- Learn the difference between a line of words and a sentence, and how to use word order and verb forms to construct sentences.
- Practice writing digits, dates, telephone numbers, and postcodes.
- Understand the conventions of forms, such as personal details, use of upper and lower case letters, and printing information in block letters.
