Secondary schools’ climate conference 2024

Published: 12 September 2024

The secondary schools’ conference was held on Thursday 11 July at Sandhurst School.

The conference was organised and hosted by Sustainability and Environmental Education (SEEd).

Schools involved

Just under 50 students from across 6 schools were in attendance:

  1. Garth Hill College
  2. Edgbarrow School
  3. Ranelagh School
  4. Sandhurst School
  5. Kings Academy Easthampstead Park
  6. Brakenhale School

Programme

The secondary schools’ conference was designed around a series of talks from different stakeholders and roundtable discussions.

The final set of roundtable discussions provided students with the opportunity to identify and discuss sustainability issues that were important to them and develop goals and actions for their own schools.

Students also had an opportunity to engage with community groups, local charities and the council who had stands at the conference.

Sustainability issues

The sustainability issues that were identified and discussed by the students were:

  1. ‘We want to reduce plastic production as it harms people both physically and mentally.’
  2. ‘Deforestation causes loss of habitat and excess release of CO2 into the atmosphere.’
  3. ‘Waste is a problem because it can destroy habitats and endanger species.’
  4. ‘Biodiversity loss is a problem because insects are a key part of the ecosystem everywhere.’
  5. ‘Overconsumption and overreliance on unsustainable materials is a problem because it ends up harming oceans, animals and us.’
  6. ‘Overconsumerism has knock on impacts such as requiring to extract higher levels of resources.’
  7. ‘Water pollution destroys marine habitats and ecosystems.’

Sustainability goals

The following sustainability goals, ideas and commitments were identified and created by the secondary schools:

Brakenhale School

At Brakenhale, we will strive to reduce the amount of environmental waste on our site, by setting up a litter management system.

From this, we will encourage our staff and students to get involved and participate in the recycling and repurposing of our waste material, raising awareness through assemblies, a ‘drop-down day’ and student council meetings.

The whole community will get involved, understanding the consequences of not doing it.
