Three day dementia course

This 3 day course will be delivered by Dr Gemma Jones and will focus on understanding yourself as a carer.

The course is funded by a donation to the Alzheimer Café UK and hosted by the Camberley Alzheimer Café.

There are a limited number of places on this course and allocated on a ‘first come first serve’ basis.

The theme for day one is 'exploring the perspective of the person with dementia'. 

The agenda for the day is as follows:

Registration: 9:45am

Introductions: 10:00am to 11:15am 

Break: 11:15am to 11:30am

Discussion

  • Time: 11:30am to 12:30pm 
  • Topic: What changes have you noticed in the person you care for?

Lunch: 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Discussion:

  • Time: 1:30pm to 2:30pm
  • Topic: What do we know about what it is like to have dementia?

Break: 2:30pm to 2:45pm

Discussion:

  • Time: 2:45pm to 4pm
  • Topic: The difference between cannot and will not and early changes

The theme for day two is 'understanding the progression of dementia'.

The agenda for the day is as follows:

Questions and discussion:  

  • Time: 10:00am to 11:15am  
  • Topic: Sensory changes in aging and dementia (especially vision)

Break: 11:15am to 11:30am

  • Time: 11:30am to 12:30pm 
  • Topic: Implications for people’s struggles and behaviour changes

Lunch: 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Discussion:

  • Time: 1:30pm to 2:30pm
  • Topic: The "Behavioural Staging” model for understanding where as person is in their dementia illness

Break: 2:30pm to 2:45pm

Discussion:

  • Time: 2:45pm to 4pm
  • Topic: Language and communication changes

The theme for day three is 'about carers'.

Break: 11:15am to 11:30am

  • Time: 11:30am to 12:30pm 
  • Topic: What do we know about family carers and how to protect yourself from too much stress?

Lunch: 12:30pm to 1:30pm

  • Time: 1:30pm to 2:30pm
  • Topic: What are the stages of grieving and guilt that carers go through?

Break: 2:30pm to 2:45pm

Discussion:

  • Time: 2:45pm to 4pm
  • Topic: Adapting communication

Day three will close with questions and an evaluation.
