Bracknell Forest's first student climate change conference

Yesterday saw Bracknell Forest’s first student climate change conference take place, with over 70 students from the borough’s secondary schools in attendance. 

Students aged 11 and above enjoyed a jam-packed itinerary at Garth Hill College, including a visit from celebrity wildlife expert and conservationist, Chris Packham. The day started with a presentation from Greenpeace, who set the scene for students, providing them with insight on the current climate situation and explaining the role they play in tackling climate change.

Students then took part in a workshop run by Design Nature and were assisted in developing an action plan they could take back to their school. After lunch, keynote speaker, Chris Packham empowered students to take action and shared how they can make a real difference.

Impressed by the days events, one student said:

“I want a future and I’m willing to fight for it. Thank you for empowering change.”

And another said:

“Thanks for inspiring me to make a difference.”

The afternoon was then bought to a close with inspiring words from Cllr Dr Gareth Barnard, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Learning. Thrilled by the success of the day, he said:

“What a fantastic day for our senior school students. This has given them a real insight into our world’s current situation and motivated them to help make a change.

“The young people here have now got the skills and tools to go back to their schools and help implement change. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.”

Cllr Mrs Dorothy Hayes MBE, Executive Member for Environment, said:

“Reducing the effects of climate change is a top priority at Bracknell Forest Council, but we can’t do it alone. This is a team effort, and everyone is responsible.

“The student conference allowed us to engage with younger residents, inspiring change early on and hopefully getting more young people, families and friends on board to make better choices for a better environment.

“Well done to everyone who took part in the day’s activities and thank you to our special guests for their time and dedication.”
