Register a birth
When you have a baby you need to register the birth.
You must register before 42 days or 6 weeks.
You should register the birth in the area the baby was born.
The Registrar will ask you:
- when the baby was born
- where the baby was born
- the sex of the baby
- the baby’s full names and surname
They will also ask you questions about you and your partner, like what your names are and what you do
Who can register a birth?
If you are married or in a civil partnership, either parent can register the birth.
If you are not married, then the mother needs to register the birth.
When you register the birth, you can buy a birth certificate.
A birth certificate costs £4 if you get it on the day of registration.
