Orienteering at South Hill Park

The course at South Hill Park has been designed to operate on many levels.

It can be used by beginners and more advanced orienteers alike.

Thanks to Berkshire Orienteers for their time and advice in setting up this course, and assistance with creating the maps.

Features

It features:

  • 23 control points (9 on the north side of the park and 14 on the south side)
  • collect all the letters and it will spell out the Latin name of the giant Wellingtonia tree
  • for beginners, less complex courses of 4-6 control points can be created around the lawn areas (on either north or south sides of the park) to find a collection of letters
  • maps designed to show the features and vegetation on site - we recommend you spend a few moments studying the legend before starting the course

Instructions

Each number on the map represents a wooden post. On the post you will find a red and white square marker with a number and letter written inside it.

  1. visit each numbered post and write down the letter you discover on the marker
  2. return to the start when you have collected all the letters
  3. re-arrange your letters in this order to reveal two hidden words (one for the north side, and one for the south)
  4. you can find the answers on separate sheets
