High Street car park closed on 31 October. This followed independent surveyor reports that showed the structure is corroding and cannot be fixed.
The car park was safe to use but the structure is coming to the end of its life.
We had already taken out the middle parking bays to spread weight load. This provided a temporary solution to keep it safe and open. However, surveyors have said that this cannot continue as the structure is corroding.
Use of the car park
High Street car park was mainly used by council staff working in the nearby Time Square office.
It was also used by a handful of monthly season ticket holders.
Season ticket holders
The last date to buy a season ticket for High Street car park was 1 October 2023.
Alternative parking
Bracknell town centre has lots of alternative car parks available. Braccan Walk, Princess Square, Albert Road, Weather Way are all within walking distance of the town centre.
The closure of High Street car park should not impact on people’s ability to park, as only The Avenue car park reaches capacity at Christmas peak times. The others have plenty of space all year.
Shopmobility users
Anyone who parked in High Street car park to access Shopmobility in Princess Square should use Princess Square car park from Wednesday 1 November. The car park has lifts from all floors to the ground floor where Shopmobility is located.
Businesses under the car park
Structural engineers have advised that the businesses under High Street car park could remain in place safely until 2025. This is subject to regular inspections.
Future of the site
The site will be added to the town centre masterplan. This sets out areas for redevelopment.
It is not yet known what the site could become in the future.
In the short term, it will be securely hoarded and decommissioned.
