It is a role that carries significant responsibility, but also the privilege of contributing to the success and wellbeing of the entire school community.
Why I choose to volunteer
Throughout my educational journey, I admired the dedication, skill, and humanity of my teachers, and becoming a parent strengthened that appreciation. While I may not possess the patience required to stand at the front of a classroom, I have long held a desire to support those who do.
When I came across the governor opportunity, it felt like the right moment to act on that commitment. To honour the educators who shaped my own development, and contribute to a school community that supports so many children and has given so much to countless families.
What I like about being a volunteer
Volunteering is shaped by my lived experiences by moments when I needed support or saw others facing hardship and the understanding that even small acts of service can create meaningful change. These experiences have instilled in me a strong belief in the value of giving back.
I’ve always sought ways to contribute, from developing training materials to mentoring postgraduate students. What I appreciate most is the tangible difference it makes, seeing processes improve, watching burdens lighten, or witnessing students' progress with confidence. Knowing that my contribution has played even a small part in someone’s growth or in strengthening a community is profoundly rewarding.
What the role involves
The governor role focuses on providing strategic leadership and supporting the headteacher in delivering the school’s long term vision and priorities. It is not about day to day running but about strategic oversight, asking the right questions, and monitoring progress. Effective communication with stakeholders and strong collaboration are essential.
Training gives governors a clear understanding of governance responsibilities, statutory requirements, and the processes behind effective school leadership. As a collective, the governing board brings professional skills and community perspectives. This diversity strengthens decision‑making in areas such as budget approval, safeguarding oversight, and the appointment and performance management of the Headteacher.
It is a role that carries significant responsibility, but also the privilege of contributing to the success and wellbeing of the entire school community.
