Chair and governor vacancies for Hawthorn School

Hawthorn School is a new SEMH (social emotional and mental health) school opening in September 2025.

Make a difference as a school governor

The work of the Hawthorn local governing body includes:

  • setting the strategy for the school (in line with the Trust’s vision)
  • acting as a critical friend and ensuring accountability of school leaders

We are looking for a number of skill sets and previous governance experience would be helpful but not essential. We just need passionate and committed individuals with an empathy for young people with special educational needs.

About you

You don’t need to have experience in education to make a meaningful contribution as a school governor. We’re looking for people who care deeply about improving life chances for children with social, emotional, and mental health needs. You’ll bring curiosity, good judgement, and a willingness to both support and challenge.

Whether you have professional expertise, lived experience, or simply the time and commitment to get involved, your voice could help shape a school at the very beginning of its journey.

Full training and support will be provided - you won’t be on your own, and your contribution could make a real difference.

About us

Propeller Academy Trust is more than a collection of schools, it is a thriving community built on shared values, collaboration, and the belief that together, we can achieve remarkable outcomes. Hawthorn School will be our 5th special school.

About the role

The board meets for 2 hours, 6 times a year (plus reading time). There would also be an expectation to visit the school for assurance work at least 3 times a year.
