If so, Garth Hill College, a modern, inclusive secondary school and sixth form in the heart of Bracknell, would like to hear from you. 

A rewarding role

We are looking for new members with the skills and commitment to strengthen our governing board and help us achieve our vision for young people. As unpaid volunteers, governors help develop the college, working collaboratively to make sure pupils get the best possible education as well as enrichment opportunities to fuel their passions and broaden their horizons. 

Governors look at the big picture, providing critical support and challenge to the college leadership. Specific responsibilities include:

  • developing a vision and strategy for the college
  • holding senior leaders to account for educational performance
  • overseeing the financial performance 
  • facilitating the views of the school community - pupils, staff, and parents

In return for the opportunity to develop, we ask governors to make a commitment of time to their role. We also understanding governors have other commitments in their lives. Typical activities:    

  • attend board meetings (normally 8 per year)
  • occasionally attend working parties and ad hoc meetings
  • act as a link governor for a specific area of responsibility 
  • take part in training (provided free of charge by the local authority and the National Governors Association)

The skills we are looking for

Generally, being a governor requires a passion for young people’s education, a willingness to challenge and to learn, and the ability to work collaboratively with others. It also requires people skills such as tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.

Specifically, the board aims to contain a range of relevant professional skills and experience to fulfil its functions. So, if you also have any of the following, we would especially like to hear from you:

  • knowledge and experience of education
  • leadership skills
  • commercial and finance experience
  • analysis of performance data experience
