Governor vacancy at St Michael’s Easthampstead CE Primary School

St Michael's Easthampstead, Church of England Primary School has a vacancy for a foundation governor. We are looking for someone from the local community who is passionate about education and who wants to help the school flourish.

No previous or specific governor experience needed. We are looking for people who:

  • have enthusiasm and a willingness to learn
  • have the confidence to challenge and actively contribute during discussions
  • have an ability to work closely and collaboratively with others
  • want to improve outcomes for children and education

Foundation governors are generally, but not necessarily, active members of a Christian community. They should be:

  • committed to education in a Christian context
  • willing to uphold and promote the school's distinctive Christian foundation, values and ethos

Applicants will need to fill in a form that is countersigned by the applicant's parish priest, local minister or church leader.

About us

The full governing body has 12 members of which 7 are foundation governors, the remaining spaces are made up of parents, staff, the headteacher and a local authority governor.

Meetings are held every 6 weeks. They last approximately 2 hours and are very interactive. Most of our current governors work full time and manage to fit in their role around their other commitments. Their motivation is to make a positive contribution to the education of our children.

Training for governors is provided free of charge by the local authority or through the National Governance Association and additional, more specific training for governance in Church Schools, is available through the Oxford Diocese.

The role

School governors are volunteers who work together to provide support and challenge to the school’s leaders.

Much of the role of a governor is about using common sense and working together in the best interests of the children.

Governors play a very important role in the following ways:

  • decide the school’s vision
  • make sure that money is spent on the right things
  • make sure the school delivers the best education it can for the children

In return, governors learn skills that they may not get elsewhere, as well as gaining a wider view about a key part of their community. Most importantly, governors get the satisfaction of knowing they are helping to make a difference in the education of the children who attend St Michael’s Easthampstead.
