Why I choose to volunteer
Originally as a teacher in a primary school outside of Bracknell Forest, I wanted to broaden my own experiences of school leadership beyond my teaching role.
As a governor I believe we are in a position to act as a supportive but critical friend to the school's leadership team.
As chair of the governing body, I work to build the governing body's capacity to offer the school a breadth of insight and challenge to improve school outcomes so they are the best they can be.
What I like about being a volunteer
Through both the governor and chair roles I have had experiences that I may not have had through my day job. These include performance management of the headteacher, understanding school finances, pay panel for staff, and subject link roles including Special Educational Needs and Pupil Premium children.
Volunteering provides an opportunity to see how other school communities operate and the challenges they experience.
What the role involves
The role is broad and a 'have-a-go' attitude and willingness to learn is paramount. Reading the papers and attendance at full governing body meetings offers opportunities to challenge and discuss school priorities.
