Domestic abuse training

Who this course is for

This course is for frontline professionals working in the Bracknell Forest area. This includes those in the public sector, voluntary sector or individuals who are new to the domestic abuse sector. It is for people working with adults, children or young people and is an introductory-level course designed for people with little prior knowledge of domestic abuse.

Course content

This face-to-face full day or half day virtual course is a practical introduction to domestic abuse. Learners will be supported to: 

  • recognise indicators of abuse
  • understand the dynamics of abuse
  • respond to disclosures in a safe, trauma-informed and effective way

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • understand the definition, dynamics and patterns of domestic abuse
  • recognise the additional barriers and experiences of marginalised or minoritised groups affected by domestic abuse
  • understand the extent, severity and impact of domestic abuse on adults and children
  • recognise indicators and warning signs that someone may be experiencing domestic abuse
  • understand the lived experience of victim-survivors, including the complexities and risk of leaving an abusive relationship
  • respond safely and effectively to disclosures, using trauma-informed and victim-centred approaches
  • identify local policies, procedures and pathways for support, including Bracknell Forest services and national help available
  • reflect on how this learning applies to their own professional role and responsibilities

Who this course is for

This course is for frontline professionals working in the Bracknell Forest area. This includes those in the public sector, voluntary sector or people who are new to the role of MARAC (Multi Agency Risk Assessment Conference) officer who may receive disclosures of domestic abuse. It provides DASH (Domestic Abuse, Stalking, Harassment and Honour Based Abuse) risk identification checklist training.

The training is suitable for those working with adults, children and young people. It is designed as a follow-on from the Introduction to Domestic Abuse course.

Course content

This is a face-to-face full day or half day virtual course. It is a practical course designed to help professionals working in the Bracknell Forest area to:

  • develop confidence in identifying, assessing and managing risk
  • use the DASH risk identification checklist
  • understand when and how to refer to MARAC

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • understand agency responsibilities for recognising and responding to risk
  • understand how risk is identified, assessed and managed in domestic abuse cases
  • use the DASH risk identification checklist confidently and appropriately
  • know when and how to refer to MARAC, including the importance of proportionate information sharing
  • understand the role of the independent domestic violence advocate and how multi-agency safety planning works
  • identify local and national support services
  • reflect on how this learning applies to their own professional role and responsibilities
