Boiler Upgrade Scheme

This scheme provides grants to support the installation of heat pumps or, in some circumstances, a biomass boiler.

Eligibility

There are several ways to be eligible for this scheme.

Property

For a property to be eligible for this scheme, it must have a valid energy performance certificate (EPC). It must not have outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation.

Any recommended insulation must be installed and a new EPC obtained before a grant can be approved.

Where biomass boilers will be installed, the property must be in a rural location and not be connected to the gas grid.

Properties that are not eligible for this scheme include:

  • social housing
  • the majority of new build properties
  • a property that has previously received government funding or support for a heat pump or biomass boiler

Self-build properties are not eligible for biomass boilers.

Heating system

To be eligible, the new heating system must:

  • fulfil all hot water and space heating requirements for the property
  • be certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) - a certified installer can recommend the best heating for your property
  • replace all parts of the original heating system

Individual eligibility

To be eligible, you must own the property you are applying for. This includes second homes, properties let to tenants and business premises.

You are eligible even if you have previously received funding for energy efficiency improvements. These include improvements such as installing insulation.

For existing properties (not self-build), the new heating system must be replacing an oil, gas or electric heating system.
