Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you could get a grant to help cover the cost of replacing a fossil fuel heating system in your home.
Available grants:
- £7,500 for an air source heat pump or ground source heat pump
- £5,000 for a biomass boiler
Property eligibility
For a property to be eligible, it must have a valid energy performance certificate (EPC) and no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation.
A property must be in a rural location and not connected to the gas grid to be eligible for a biomass boiler.
Properties that are not eligible for this scheme include:
- social housing
- the majority of new-build properties
- a property that has previously had government funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler
Self-build properties are not eligible for biomass boilers.
Heating system eligibility
To be eligible, the new heating system must:
- be replacing a fossil fuel heating system such as oil, gas, electric or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas)
- fulfil all hot water and space heating requirements for the property
- be certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) - a certified installer can recommend the best heating for your property
Individual eligibility
To be eligible, you must own the property you are applying for. This includes second homes, properties let to tenants and business premises.
You are eligible even if you have previously received funding for energy efficiency improvements. These include improvements such as installing insulation.
Applying for the grant
To apply for a grant, you must:
- Contact a suitable MCS certified installer to get quotes for the work.
- Confirm you are eligible (your installer will tell you).
- Agree a quote with your chosen installer.
