ESOL for beginners pre-entry: summer term
This course aims to build on our English for Beginners foundation course by offering learners the opportunity to prepare for ESOL Entry 1, through the addition of a portfolio.
English for Beginners is a course for literate learners who would like to further develop and consolidate their listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills. With the support of tutors, learners can explore English culture and build their communication skills for everyday life in the UK.
The content for the course revises, consolidates and extends the topics completed at foundation level, with a greater focus on language analysis, listening and speaking to help learners prepare for their next step.
The portfolio student will complete the core course and their tasks will be kept separate from their core course file.
Core course materials are based on the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum programme and learners will develop their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through topic-led sessions including:
- Introducing and describing myself and others (family and friends).
- Talking about my hobbies, interests, skills, personal attributes and daily routines.
- Talking about my home, local places, weather and seasons.
- Out and About – English for transport, shopping, holidays and social events.
- My Future – My health and wellbeing, learning for life, jobs and the workplace.
- Asking and Answering questions in English.
Entry requirements
Learners must be over the age of 19 years old
Learners should be literate and established at a foundation/pre entry level English to benefit from this course.
Teaching method
You will learn in a classroom, working individually, in pairs and small groups. A variety of power point slides, audio recordings, videos, pictures, props (everyday items), handouts, and iPads will be used to support different learning styles.
How is your progress checked
Individual learner progress is tracked and reviewed on a weekly basis. Each student maintains a weekly ‘learning journey’ record to track their progress and make a note of questions to discuss with the tutor.
There will be a set of reading, writing, speaking and listening tasks for each term. The portfolio will record the level of achievement and the number of terms the student has completed.
Extra study required at home
Learners are encouraged to build personal lexis notebooks and revise target language summaries provided on their handouts each week. A weekly video is published through the English for Beginners face book group to continue learning at home.
More information
There are no additional costs. There is an optional break time tea, coffee & biscuits charge of £1.50, available in the café area.
This is a non-accredited course. Learners will receive a certificate from the Open Learning Centre on successful completion. The certificate will record the level of achievement and number of terms completed.
