Have you made the nice list this year by recycling correctly?
Here are a few things you can do this Christmas to keep control of your waste.
Why not use reusable gift boxes or fabric wrapping this year instead of paper? These can be reused next year.
If you have paper to throw away, double check that every part of your present wrapping is recyclable before putting it in your blue bin. Remove all sticky tape and embellishments.
Wrapping paper must be non-foil to be accepted, so do the scrunch test to make sure. If you scrunch it and it remains in place, then it’s ok to recycle.
Why not make your own cards this year using old recyclable materials? Avoid using any ribbons, glitter or bows that can’t be recycled.
Hold onto this year’s Christmas cards and reuse them as tags or cards for next year.
Delivery boxes should be broken down and recycled.
Bubble wrap and plastic film cannot be recycled in your blue bin but can be taken to your local carrier bag collection point at the supermarket.
These can be recycled at your local bottle bank, or at the recycling centre.
Glass bottles no longer need to be separated by colour.
In order to prevent food waste, only buy the amount of food you need this Christmas.
Love Food Hate Waste has a portion calculator that can help.
Leftovers can be frozen and reused at a later date, or anything that can’t be reused can be disposed of in your food waste caddy.
These should not be thrown away at home. They cannot be collected in kerbside bin collections.
Instead take them to your nearest recycling point. You can also arrange for a free doorstep reuse collection service for some items.
Household batteries can be taken to most large supermarkets and also our local recycling centres.
Christmas trees will be collected as garden waste if they are cut up and put in your brown bin or a council garden waste sack. Remember to remove all decorations and lights.
The bin lid or sack must be closed. Any trees not in a closed brown bin or council garden waste sack, or sacks that have not been booked, will not be taken.
Alternatively, you can book a bulky collection to have Christmas trees removed or take them to the recycling centre.
