1. Benefits

People with dementia may be entitled to a range of benefits including:

The Age UK website has advice on benefits, including a benefits calculator.

2. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST)

You may be invited to attend a CST. This is a programme of themed activity sessions held at the Memory Clinic one morning a week for 14 weeks.

3. Community Mental Health Team for Older Adults (CMHTOA)

Be aware of services available through the CMHTO, including the Dementia Advisory Service.

4. Create moments to remember (advice from experienced carers)

Spend quality time with loved ones through meaningful activities that strengthen connection and emotional well-being. Consider capturing these moments with photos, videos, or written reflections. Documenting these memories can provide comfort and serve as a valuable reminder of the positive times shared.

5. Driving

If you are driving with a diagnosis of dementia  you must tell:

  • the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency
  • your car insurance company

6. Financially plan ahead

Consider completing a lasting power of attorney for finance and health and welfare.

This is a legal document that lets you appoint one or more people to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf.

Once an LPA is in place, share the document with your utility companies and bank etc.

7. SIGNAL - our carer organisation

Our carer organisation for Bracknell Forest is SIGNAL. They offer free information and advice to adult carers. They also offer support and general help with form filling.

8. Support groups and events

There are lots of support groups and events for you to consider joining. Attending a social group can help with wellbeing, reduce social isolation and link you in with others in a similar situation.  Our experienced carer volunteers are also often on hand to offer reassurance and guidance.
