A recent Ofsted inspection of Bracknell Forest Community Learning concluded that it was a good provider of adult education.

Based at Bracknell Open Learning Centre on Rectory Lane, the centre offers adults a variety of community learning courses. These include English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), numeracy, family learning, wellbeing, preparation for work and information and communication technology.

Learners can also work towards accredited qualifications, including functional skills English and mathematics.

The inspectors commented that learners enjoy attending their courses and they grow in confidence as they learn new skills. Learners value the support and encouragement tutors give them and develop useful skills to gain employment. The skills learnt from courses, such as Functional Skills English, can help learners apply for jobs.

Learners on ESOL courses learn skills, such as how to book appointments to see their GP and, as a result, interact in their local communities.

Leaders at the centre were praised for choosing courses to meet local skills and employment needs and to support the council’s strategic priority to build stronger communities.

The leaders plan the order of topics in each course, so learners build on their existing knowledge. They then develop new skills and knowledge quickly and confidently.

Cheryl Eyre, assistant director for education and learning, said:

“We are very proud of the Open Learning Centre and the courses it offers to the community. The result of the Ofsted inspection is well deserved as they provide great learning opportunities to our residents. Learners enjoy courses offering, not only valuable life skills, but also enhancing their knowledge in parenting, wellbeing and arts.”
