Statement
Thames Valley Police and other agencies remain on scene at Oak Avenue in Sandhurst.
Detective Superintendent Andrew Penrith of the Berkshire East Local Command Unit, said:
“Officers from Thames Valley Police and other agencies remain on scene at a property in Oak Avenue.
“Thames Valley Police was called at 2.12pm on 6 June to reports of a fire at an address in Oak Avenue.
“Officers attended the scene and gave first aid to a man in his 80s, who was later taken to hospital by air ambulance.
“Sadly, the man later died in hospital.
“There is no ongoing criminal investigation and a coronial investigation is progressing.
“Our thoughts remain with the family following this sad death.
“The reason for our presence and other agencies is to remove potentially flammable and hazardous chemicals from the property.
“Our top priority is to protect the public and those who are going into the property in order to remove any chemicals.
“As such those going into the property will be utilising specialist protective clothing.
“This is to protect all involved in case of any spillage of chemicals, which are all currently contained.
“Again, this is precautionary and we have not identified any immediate risk to health.
“At this time there is no need for evacuation of any neighbouring properties, however this will be continually assessed.
“This work may take some time to complete and we would like to thank the residents for their patience while we continue to make the property safe.”
