We are updating our Local Transport Plan (LTP). The LTP is a document that sets out the transport needs, challenges, priorities, and objectives for the borough.
It will shape future transport schemes and development, aligning with the emerging Local Plan which sets out housing growth for 2037.
Work so far
Throughout 2023 we have been developing new policies for LTP4, including:
- a walking and cycling consultation (PDF, 7 MB) to help form our emerging Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan
- the adoption of our Bus Service Improvement Plan
- the development of our Electric Vehicle Strategy (PDF, 2 MB) which includes potential locations for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure
A lot has changed since we wrote our last LTP. It is has become outdated because it is not adaptive to changes in transport, social and environmental trends.
Cleaner travel
We want to start with a focus on cleaner travel. To help us with this, we want to residents to think about how they can reduce their carbon emissions in daily activities. Together, we can work towards reaching net zero as close to 2030 as possible.
To support this, we will:
- encourage greater use of our excellent walking and cycling network
- explore a more efficient and smart use of our road network
- improve EV infrastructure by providing more charge points
- explore changes in the way public transport is provided, using technology to allow more demand responsive routes
- work with schools to promote sustainable transport and encourage parents and pupils to use active ways to school
- provide safer routes to school with the adoption of school streets
- work with the private sector to make sure these values are adopted across the borough’s workforce
Building on this, and with a move to greater sustainability included in all of the council's emerging policies, we have created a vision for our future LTP.
Our vision for 2037
To develop a sustainable and resilient transport network that reduces carbon and provides choice and access for all in a safe and healthy environment, making Bracknell Forest a desirable place to live, work and grow.
How we will deliver the plan
We want our LTP to be easily accessible to residents. We will keep our existing approach which includes 3 over-arching elements. These form the key pillars of focus and delivery.
However, this approach has been updated to reflect our goal of being carbon neutral by 2050. We will make sure that decarbonisation is embedded in the way we work and deliver services in the future.
Key elements
Sustainable access
We will provide cleaner, healthier and more sustainable access to key services. This will benefit growing communities and make movement easier for everyone.
This includes:
- EV strategy
- walking and cycling
- future mobility and innovation
- rights of way
Public transport
We will explore the future use of public transport and how we connect communities and provide access beyond Bracknell.
This includes:
- taxi, private hire and community transport
- rail
- aviation (airspace changes)
- buses
Highway management
We will work with the Department for Transport and regional transport bodies to calculate our future carbon emissions. We will then use this to create our plan, which includes interventions and schemes for the future.
This includes:
- asset management
- road safety
- network management
- freight and logistics
- managing growth
