A glass collection service will start in autumn 2026 for all households in Bracknell Forest.
New glass collection service
All houses will be provided with a 140-litre wheeled bin. This will be emptied once every 4 weeks. Your glass bin will be emptied on the working day after your usual collection. This is to reduce the impact of multiple bins out at collection points on "all bins day".
Flats will be provided with communal wheeled bins of up to 360 litres. These will be emptied every 2 weeks.
This is a mandatory service for every household and a requirement of the Environment Act 2021.
Current waste collection services
All other waste collection services will continue as they are. This includes:
Current glass recycling banks
When kerbside collections start, glass recycling banks will be reduced by at least half.
The locations of the remaining banks are not yet confirmed.
Why we are doing this
The Simpler Recycling legislation, a part of the statutory requirements of the Environment Act 2021, requires local authorities to collect a core list of materials, including glass.
Funding has been allocated to all local authorities in England to support meeting the requirements. This funding is from the Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging.
Collecting glass separately is the best financial option. Wheeled bins for glass are easier and safer to move than kerbside boxes. Kerbside boxes are heavy to lift when full of glass. This would impact on both residents and collection crews.
For more information, read the Simpler Recycling report and record of decision under item 7 from the Cabinet meeting on 24 June 2025.
What happens next
The waste and recycling team are working on the details of the new service. We will communicate these to residents over the next year.
Help and support will be available closer to the launch date.
