Cabinet approves new affordable and social rent homes

Different types of housing

The council’s cabinet has this week agreed to support the development of new affordable homes on 2 council sites which are either affordable or available for social rent.

The decision was made at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday 15 October to support a 100% affordable development on the council’s old depot site. The development will include a mix of flats and 3 and 4 bedroom properties. It was also agreed to create an affordable scheme of larger family sized homes for social rent on a site in Binfield Road.

Both sites are owned by the council and will be developed with financial support from the council – this has been agreed in principle by the cabinet. The money will come from developer contributions for affordable housing that the council collects on behalf of the community.

The depot site will be taken forward by the Cambium Partnership – of which the council is a partner alongside Countryside Properties. The Binfield site will be taken forward by a registered housing provider.

Cllr Helen Purnell, cabinet member for the environment, community and housing, said:

“We have consistently said that we need more affordable properties in Bracknell Forest for local families. Likewise, we need more social rented properties so local people can access good quality homes at a lower rent. These 2 sites will offer the opportunity for people to access a range of properties – including larger family homes, which we desperately need, at a genuinely affordable rent.

“This is a big step forward and further demonstrates our commitment to creating safe and affordable places for people to live – which we pledged as a priority in the 2023 to 2027 Council Plan.”
