Background
World War II ended on 15 August 1945 when Imperial Japan surrendered to the allied forces. The war ended in Europe in May 1945, but many thousands of armed forces personnel were still fighting in the Far East until the Imperial Japanese surrender. 15 August 1945 became known as ‘Victory over Japan’ or VJ Day.
Often referred to as the 14th Army, the British and Commonwealth’s volunteer army was one of the most diverse in history, with over 40 languages spoken and all major religions represented.
Many Commonwealth veterans and their descendants live in multicultural communities around the world, including Bracknell Forest. The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst has long-standing ties to the regiments and units of the 14th Army, remembering the success and comradeship of those who fought.
